5-Legged Bench
Poplar, The Brown Daily Herald (pulverized), polyurethane
2017

This 5-legged solid wood table evokes prehistoric forms and masses of rock. A shell of paper pulp made from recycled political journals and polyurethane covers the entirety of the table’s surface. Very close inspection may reveal stray agglomerations of letters, but the stories appropriated to make this piece are now entirely illegible. Though the pulp masks a complex joint structure aligned with the construction values of traditional wood-working, the table itself appears as a monolith, carved via a subtractive process from some post-industrial, as-of-yet unidentified sedimentary mineral formed from the discarded thoughts of yesterday’s papers.
