The Dog Star is the brightest star we can see from Earth. Since time immemorial people across the world have associated the rising of the Dog Star with the changing of the seasons and climate: heavy rain, flooding, the heat of summer (N. Hemisphere) and the beginning of winter (S. Hemisphere). Its appearance was something to be both celebrated and feared. From the Iliad:
“Sirius rises late in the dark, liquid sky
On summer nights, star of stars
Orion’s Dog they call it, brightest
Of all, but an evil portent, bringing heat
And fevers to suffering humanity. “
The Dog Star is only about 8.6 light years away.
